Good Rule to Follow : It is always wise to buy your Handgun, Rifle, Mares Leg, and Derringer all in the same caliber. I personally recommend 45 Long Colt (LC).

Side by Side (Double Barrel) Coach Shotgun with Hammers …..
Most Popular Brands - EAA and Rossi 12-Gauge
Manufacturers :
European American Armory (EAA)

Pacific International SxS (Spanish Made)
TOZ (Russian Made)
Norinco a.k.a. Interstate Arms* (Chinese Made)
Notes :
1) Norinco Firearms are rough and often have problems;
2) Some people buy Hammerless Coach Shotguns like those from Stoeger but in my opinion to be authentic you need a Coach Shotgun with Hammers.
* Interstate Arms is often referred to as IAC.

Single Six Western Revolvers …...
These generally come in 45LC, 44 Magnum, 357 Magnum, and 22 Caliber.
Most Popular Caliber is the 45 Long Colt (LC).
Most Popular Brands - American Western Arms (AWA); Ruger Blackhawk; Colt.
Also many people buy knock-offs such as Uberti.
Most Popular Western Revolver Size - 51/2 or 6 Inch Barrel.
Many people buy a 22 Caliber Cowboy Revolver to practice fast draw because the ammo is less expensive.
Single Western Style Cowboy Holster with tie down and belt are the most common. Some people do the double holster set-up. Some carry an extra side holster opposite side.

Pump Action Shotguns with Hammers …..
Most Popular - Winchester and Marlin
Some people buy the knockoff from Norinco.

Most Popular - Henry and Rossi
Manufacturers :

Guidelines for Selling and Buying a Used Shotgun :

Always start your search off that - the gun is ' USED ' ....
Used firearms for the most part are like used cars, what someone paid for it new is a moot point. Saying that selling and buying always comes down to what someone is willing to pay for it.

- If you are buying a shotgun for Home Protection the best selection is a single barrel break action 12-gauge shotgun.
- If you are tromping around the desert like we have here in Arizona a single barrel break action 410 or 20 gauge modified legal length make great snake guns.

When buying a shotgun ask yourself what you want it for ....
- If it is for hunting a 20 Gauge Pump makes a good choice for a teenager or the ladies.
- 410 Single Barrel Break Action Shotguns make good truck and snake guns. They also make good starter junior hunting guns. One manufacturer makes such a shotgun called the ' Snake Charmer '.
- 20 Gauge Single Barrel Break Action Shotguns can be used for home protection or for hunting. They also make good truck and snake guns when modified to a smaller legal length.
- For the most part avoid 16 Gauge Shotguns, the ammo is expensive and is harder to find. If buying one, get it at a great price.
- 12 Gauge Shotguns are the most popular and ammo of all kinds are easy to find, even reloading your own shells is easy with 12 gauge.
- 28 Gauge is another shotgun that has come and gone its way; ammo is expensive compared to 20 or 12 gauge. The plus of a 28 Gauge, however it will outperform all the other standard gauges but just never caught on. Only a few manufacturers even make a modern shotgun in 28 Gauge. Makes a good collector piece.
- 10 Gauge is primarily used for hunting foul such as goose, but many people like to use a Single Barrel for home defense. These will cost more money and are harder to find. The ammo is expensive compared to 12 gauge. Personally I don't think they warrant the investment.

Types of Shotguns :
Single Barrel break open – most common
Single Barrel bolt action
Over / Under Barrels
Side by Side Barrel (Double Barrel)
Pump
Semi-Auto
Auto (used for police, military, tactical, and combat)

Variations of Shotguns :
Modified Choke
Full Choke
Rib Barrel
Various Barrel Lengths
Various Overall Length
With Hammers (Single, Double, Pump)
Without Hammers (Hammerless)
Break Action
Bolt Action
Sawed Off (a.k.a. Lupara)
Ejector Ready (Single, Double, Over/Under - Shell ejects completely from barrel when opened)
Pop up Shell (Single, Double, Over/Under – Shell must be removed manually by hand from barrel)
Rifle Slug Barrel (personally I think you might as well buy a rifle for hunting)
Interchangeable Barrels (some of the more expensive shotguns like Browning, Benelli, and Remington come with a variety of barrels and can be changed out for use. i.e. Trap and Skeet Shooting, Foul Hunting, Small Game Hunting

List of Shotgun Manufacturers (excludes custom, most high end, and antique) :
Stevens / Savage
Harrington Richards (H&R)
JC Higgins
Ithaca
Mossberg
Iver Johnson
Rossi
Beretta
Norinco (a.k.a. Interstate Norinco)
Leinad (a.k.a. Cobray Leinad)
Remington
Winchester
Marlin
Charter Arms
Cimarron Firearms
American Arms
Ruger
Colt
Uberti
Preferred Arms
Freedom Arms
Sears (a.k.a. Sears Roebuck)*
Wards (a.k.a. Montgomery Wards, often referred to as Monkey Wards)*
J.C. Penny*
European American Armory (EAA)
New England Firearms
Smith and Wesson (S&W)
SKB
Browning
Hopkins & Allen
Pardner
Saiga
Stoeger
Springfield
Baker
Baikal
Benelli
Weatherby
L.C. Smith
A. H. Fox Sterlingworth
Akkar
Izhmash (Russian)
Viasov (Russian)
Note – This does NOT include all shotgun manufactures in the world.

* U.S. Department Stores - Most of these guns branded by the department store name were made by H&R; JC Higgins; Stevens / Savage; and Winchester. The good news is the parts for the most are interchangeable.

==>Things the SELLER should know :
- You will get less money from a Pawn Shop or Licensed Firearm Dealer (Gun Shop) than a private buyer.
- Advertisements for Private Gun Sales must meet both State Laws and the Advertising Listers Requirements, i.e a Newspaper.
- Auction Sites charge a fee, these fees range from 10 to 30 percent to the seller. They may also require a listing (catalog fee). They almost always collect sales tax. They generally always have a shipping charge for transporting the firearm. Sales must be through an FFL (Federal Firearms Licensed Dealer, a Gun Shop, the local gun shop will charge the buyer a paperwork handling fee around 20 to 30 U.S. Dollars). Smart bidders (buyers) take all this into consideration before bidding online or at a live auction.
- Stop watching Reality Shows like Storage Wars, Auction Hunters, and Pawn Stars, rarely do you get the prices they show on these TV Shows.
- If you live in Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, and Texas there are a lot of Cowboy Shooters. Cowboy Shooting is popular and those guns generally get a higher sales price.
- Your sentimental value means nothing to a buyer and does not warrant any additional price.
- Sell the gun for what it's worth.
- You can try selling the gun on consignment through a local Gun Shop.
- You can also go to a local Gun Show to sell it, just take the weapon unloaded and check it in. The show will put a band around the trigger housing so it cannot be fired. Place a sign on the gun for the amount you want, then just walk around, it's a good chance you will sell it.

==> For the BUYER :
- How much are you willing to spend, what is your budget – Don't waste a seller's time if the firearm is way out of your budget limits.
- Do your homework, check prices on the Internet or through Kelly Blue Book of Gun Prices or both.
- Don't rush to buy, shop around.
- Never pay asking price.
- Thoroughly check the firearm before buying.
- Avoid buying from unscrupulous sellers.
- In a private sale, always meet the seller in a well lighted public place.
- And, most importantly, how much do you want it ?
- Gun parts are damn expensive and may not warrant repairing a less expensive firearm. Also consider whether or not you can even get the gun part. If you cannot repair the gun yourself including rebluing the metal parts or refinishing the stock you will need a Gun Smith, they run around $60.00 per hour. Get a fixed cost to do any repairs; an open ended cost may well exceed the value of the gun.
- Private sales are best for prices.
- Don't be pressured into buying with statements from the seller like …. I have had many calls on this, others are coming to see it, I have another interested party.
- Gun Shows are best for overall selection but it's a myth that you get a better price at a Gun Show, often times prices are much higher. If you buy at a Gun Show, go the last day, no one wants to lug things back home if they don't have to. Also FFL Dealers at Gun Shows are required to collect sales tax and you will have to fill out an FFL buyers transfer ATF form 4473 (note – you have to be a resident of that state and have valid identification, handguns may have a waiting period). Not all sales at Gun Shows are through dealers, many are private sales even at display tables. Look for people walking around selling their firearms, no tax or forms are needed for these sales.

My Opinion : If you are buying a home defense shotgun, buy an H&R or Stevens/Savage single barrel break action they are reliable and inexpensive, you should pay less than USD $100.00 for a used one in any gauge.

/// For both the Seller and Buyer :
- Most popular Single Barrel Break Action Shotguns are H&R and Stevens / Savage.
- The NRA Rates Firearms, for the most part these are fairly accurate.
- Experienced Buyers will consult Kelly Blue Book of Gun Prices, or at minimum look on the Internet before buying.
- The condition of the firearm means everything ....
- Is it in mint condition – never fired ?
- Does it come with the original box and paperwork ?
- Was it manufactured before 1980 ?
- Was it manufactured after 1945 ?
- Is this an antique firearm (manufactured 1898 or before) ?
- Does the shotgun meet the federal law barrel length and overall length requirements ?
- Has the barrel been cut or modified ?
- Is the inside of the barrel clean or pitted ?
- Is there any rust on the gun?
- Is the Bluing missing or faded ?
- Is there any mold or mildew ?
- Does the shotgun smell funny ?
- Is the stock damaged or needs refinishing ?
- Does it Shoot ?
- Are the screws worn or damaged ?
- Does it have a Butt Plate ?
- Does it Have a Recoil Pad ?
- Does the shotgun have any plastic parts (this is a real negative, example – trigger guard) ?
- Is this the original stock ?
- Does it have a choke ?
- Has the gun been reblued ?
- Has the gun been painted ?
- Are the serial numbers visible ?
- Are the gun markings and manufacture visible ?
- Are there any proof marks on the barrel ?
- Does the gun have matching serial numbers on all the parts ?
Is there any ammo included in the sale ?
- Are there any extras like a sling, cheek pad, adjustable sights, night sights, mounts for a flashlight or scope, ammo pad, scope, custom stock, etc. ?

The Second Amendment is one of the the most important parts of the Constitution, The Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

The Second Amendment (Amendment II) to the United States Constitution is the part of the United States Bill of Rights that protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms. It was adopted on December 15, 1791, along with the rest of the Bill of Rights.
